Design and Technology
Design and Technology is seen as an essentially practical subject concerned with design, making, and evaluation of products.
From the beginning children create products from a widening range of materials, progressing from simplified tools to more sophisticated equipment as they face further challenges in design and greater stimulus from the introduction of new materials.
The children are encouraged to be critical, in a constructive way, of their own designs and those of others in order to develop the concepts of good design and of fitness for purpose. Assignments in which a product is designed, made, and evaluated, form a key part of each year’s work. Appropriate skills and techniques are taught through focused practical tasks throughout both key stages. Emphasis is placed upon increasing quality of products as the children mature.
